National Opera: Constantinos Rigos’ successful dance triptych “3 ROOMS” is presented again


The extremely successful production “3 ROOMS“, in which the Konstantinos Rigos attempts a creative dialogue on the contemporary language of dance with two of the most important forms of dance worldwide, the leading Czech choreographer Girji Kylian and the internationally acclaimed Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharinreturns to National Opera. The impressive dance triptych will be presented, for only four performances, on February 15, 16, 18 and 19 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

The choreography of the director of the ELS Ballet, Constantinos Rigos, “The balance of a child”, to the music of the artistic director of Giorgos Koumentakis, “converses” with the emblematic choreography of Girzi Kylian Petite mort and the famous Minus 16 choreography of Ohad Naharin, on the special interpretative requirements of which the dancers will be tested.

Students of the ELS Higher Professional School of Dance also participate in the performance.

The work is based on Byzantine music and deals with the discovery of the world of nature and tradition. The choreography of Constantinos Rigos transports us to a black and white, abandoned world, where the sign of a forgotten advertisement stands like a scarecrow on the distant horizon. The ground is grassy, ​​while some sedges look like weapons from a forgotten skirmish. Adolescence, dreams, romance. Anxiety about tomorrow or anxiety about nothing. The boundaries of the world are changing, the whole world at our feet, the whole world above our heads.

“Are our choices really ours or predetermined? Experience and knowledge in the face of roughness and sensitivity create a kinesiological risk”, notes Rigos. THE George Koumentakis he says about the play: “In the first part of the play a melody, riding on an improvised dance, comes from the East overcoming every obstacle. The instruments swirl in improbable timbre combinations and endless rhythmic gallops. The notes transform into a tender wave of nostalgia. In the second part the musicians of the orchestra play with the omicron vowel and various combinations of consonants, making the isocrata seem like a piece taken from the sounds of nature. Around it are wrapped melodies that spin in perpetual circles and travel from instrument to instrument with the child’s imagination as a passenger. A war dance from Pontus is the subject of the third part. Musicians become warriors. They reach extreme situations and overcome their personal limits in a battle against time, looking forward to a better future.”
