Spain, Netherlands and Finland send Leopard 2 to Ukraine after Germany says yes

Spain is open to supplying German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Defense Minister Margarita Robles said today, following Germany’s decision to send the tanks and allow other NATO member countries to do the same.

The Netherlands also said it was ready to deliver tanks to Ukraine if needed and Finland would be among the countries sending tanks to that country.

Robles told the EFE news agency that Spain would act in coordination with Western allies in helping Ukraine repel the Russian invasion.

According to security and defense researcher at the Elcano think tank Felis Arteaga, the Spain has 108 24A tanks. About half of them are in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla and 53 are in reserve and will need to be re-equipped, said Arteaga, who added that it would likely take a few months to be ready.

THE Netherlands is ready to deliver tanks to Ukraine if needed, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said for his part. “If a contribution from the Netherlands helps, we are ready to do it,” Rutte told Dutch network RTL.

Rutte said that Netherlands could choose to buy tanks it is now leasing from Germany and give them to Ukraine.

Besides, Finnish Defense Minister Mikko Savola said that his country will join the group of countries sending tanks to Ukraine, although its contribution will be limited.

“International cooperation on the Leopards mission to Ukraine is now moving forward and Finland will participate,” Savola told reporters.

The Finnish defense minister declined to say more about the size of the Finnish contribution.
